Snowdon Horseshoe

A guided walk with Grade 1 Scrambling via Crib Goch, Garnedd Ugain, Yr Wyddfa and Y Lliwedd

The Snowdon Horseshoe is arguably one of the best mountain walking days out in the U.K. It involves some Grade 1 Scrambling, can feel very exposed at times but is a true adventure. For most of the route you are on narrow, rocky ridges with views in all directions.

You start at Pen y Pass. After a short, steep climb up the PYG track you turn right up an almost hidden path up towards Crib Goch. Picking your way between boulders and scree slopes, the summit is reached and the long, thin ridge towards Garnedd Ugain stretches out before you. After traversing this airy ridge the easier slopes lead the way towards the highest summit, Snowdon, complete with cafe and crowds!
After lunch here we leave the crowds behind and find the almost invisible start of the Watkin Path. A short descent, passing Bwlch y Saethau, where legend tells us that King Arthur suffered his fatal blow soon turns into a rocky scramble up to the twin peaks of Y Lliwedd. Another narrow ridge ends all too soon in a grassy descent down to the Miners Track at the mouth of Llyn Llydaw and then back to Pen y Pass.
