Snowdonia National Park

The Snowdonia National Park was the first of the three national parks in Wales to be designated (in 1951). The English name for the area derives from the highest peak in Wales, Snowdon, which sits at 3,560ft (1085m) high. In Welsh it is named Eryri,  a language which you will hear spoken commonly by in the towns and villages around the park as 62% of residents are Welsh speakers.

The national park extends from the Carneddau mountains in the north to the Cadair Idris range and the Dyfi hills in the south. It covers 838 sq. miles, and is mostly made up of mountainous terrain, the valleys between, and forested areas. Over 1,000 miles of footpath, coupled with huge acres of 'Right to Roam' land means that the Snowdonia National Park is a fantastic place to explore, and it would take several lifetimes to get to know every inch of it.

It attracts over 6 million visitors annually, making it the third most visited national park in England and Wales. Arguably the most popular activities in the national park are mountain walking and climbing, with many visitors concentrating on Snowdon itself. Despite the huge influx of visitors every year it is still possible to find quieter areas of the national park, even on the busiest summer days. Original Outdoors has a wide range of guided walks in Snowdonia on offer, and we can custom-build a walk or even multi-day trip just for you!

A wide range of rare flora and fauna can be found in the several SSSIs (Sites of Special Scientific Interest) across the park, such as the Snowdon Lily or the Snowdon Beetle. You can also spot wild goats, ponies, otters, polecats and birds of prey such as the Osprey or the Red Kite. If you book onto one of our guided walks or trips in Snowdonia then we will point out some of these hidden treasures to you along the way.
